Prince is a very beautiful horse and a “very special” horse. As I sit here thinking what to write about him,……I don’t know how to describe him because his movements show different than his true heart.   Prince came to us from a family who purchased him when he was three. In talking with them and the experience they had when they first brought him home, and with us then spending time with Prince, we believe that at some point, when young, maybe while being broke,…that he was abused by a man…..and maybe whipped in a stall.

When we first brought him home, as told to us by his previous family…..it took us a little over a week to earn his trust when we would walk into the stall to get him. He would go to the corner like he was afraid…..and look back at us…with those beautiful eyes as if to say, “what are you going to do to me”.  After days of us moving in slow motion, talking softly to him,…..he is now meeting us……or coming to the door when we are there. All the girls anyway. With the men,….he is very cautious….and goes to the corner. He will allow them to slowly walk up to him —-touch his neck….and then catch him,…but he stays in the corner and waits…..
He does have slightly quick movements when in a stall…..and the first week, I wasn’t sure he was going to work for what we needed.
But then I realized,…..how very sweet, humble, and “so like a small child”….he is. I am sure all of you have experienced seeing a small child feeling afraid. So sweet, humble,…..and you just want to hold them and make them feel safe. That is the way Prince is. He is not crazy with his fear….he is very sweet, humble,….and so responsive to gentle touch, gentle voice.  He is truly the first “special needs” horse I have ever had!! (:

This is a switch! Finding someone for a Special Needs horse instead of the other way around! :)

If you have love in your heart for a horse “that needs to have trust for you”,…..then Prince needs someone like you. When he goes to his new home, it will take you days of just slowly approaching him, gently touching, talking to him – until he feels safe with you. —-When that happens, he will give you SO much joy.

Prince is easy to catch in the pasture. It is so odd…….that is why we think he was abused in a stall. If it were just his temperament to not want to be caught, he would be that way in both places. He is not that way in the pasture. He will stand and wait for you and sometimes he will come toward you. I think with one person, one on one daily attention, he would eventually be the type to follow you around……because he is so loving.    On arrival to a new place, he will not stand to mount, but it only takes 3 -4 days of  him getting settled in to where he is back to standing to mount – and waiting! Prince is alert when riding,…he listens,….perks his ears,….and looks at things but he does not jump to the side, or jump in any way,…..or have other behaviors that come with spooking.

At first, he was cautious watching the traffic that we have on this 4-lane highway.  Again, he never showed any reaction…just watched and listened, ears perked – but gated right on. Prince has a really nice smooth gait…….and has a little faster gait if you want. He is not the laid back, sleepy type, slow motion walk, slow motion gait horse like we usually have to offer for sale to families. He is very stylish,…..

For all the above reasons, I would not recommend Prince for a family that is surrounded by several children. Prince would be wonderful for a teenage girl,…or any woman….who can give him one on one attention, lots of love……understanding, patience, – because, with ground manners, he is so much more trusting of women than of men. The men here mount him and ride him and he rides wonderful for them!!! It’s just when stalled, and when saddling, he is very cautious of men. Totally different with girls.
